Ibn Sina,the greatest intellectual of the middle ages,was a versatile genius .He influenced the course of thought in diverse ways . Being an outstanding encyclopedist,he made lasting contributions to the medical sciences, philosophy,logic, mysticism, mathematics, astronomy,music, and poetry.He is the only one among the great scientist of Islam to build an alaborate and complete system of science.
Abu Ali Husain Ibn And Allah Ibn Hasan Ibn Ali Ibn Sina, know as shaikh - ur-Raid( Prince of All teachers),was born in 980A.D at Afshinah near Bukhara (Turkistan).His father Abd Allah who hailed from valkh was appointed as a samanite Governor.He was later posted at Bukhara where the Young Abu Ali Sina received his early education.From the very beginning he showed an outstanding intelligence. He made such remarkable progress in his education that at the early age of 10, He was well-versed in the Quran and different branches of literature.
Abu Abd Allah an Natili, a leading Philosopher of his time, once visited Bukhara.He stayed at ibn Sina studied logic, geometry and astronomy from him The intelligent boy soon surpassed his teacher and studied by himself medicine,physics and meta& physics.Hr acquired deep knowledge of medical science and established such a high reputation as a practicing physician that reputed physicians consulted him in different case. Meta-physics he learnt from the works of Al farabi.He masterd all these subjects before he was 17years of age.
He started writing at The age of 21.His style is clear and comprehensive.it is said that he wrote 50 pages a day at an average .He is the author of no less than 238 books and treaties.His chief works on. Philosophy are 'Ash-shifa',and 'An Najat.
He compiled abook on ethics and an al-magest. He wrote treaties on geometry,arthmetic and music.He made new addition to arithmetic and astronomy as well as criticized and disproved a number of theories advance by Euclid. He wrote two books on zoology and botany. He is considered as the father of the science of geology, on account of his invaluable book on mountains in which he discussed the matters relating to the Earth's crust and gave the scientific cause for earthquakes. His main contributions is in field of medicine and philosophy .he wrote with treatment of colic in which he was a specialist.his vast work Al-Qanun,'known as Cannon in the west ,is the masterpiece among Arab scientific contributions.it is a medical encyclopedia written in five volumes.it deals with 760 drugs and diseases affecting all parts of the body from head to foot .From 12th to 17th century,Al Qanun has been a text book to medical science in the west .in the madarasahs run on traditional lines,Ibn Sina is still studied as the great Philosopher of Islam .Ibn Sina is popularly know as Avicenna in Europe. He was responsible for elevating Islamic medicine to it's peak.His portrait as well as that of Al-Razi still adorns the Grand hall of the faculty of medicine in the university of Paris.
He became bed ridden at Hamadan.Having realized that his end was apporoching,he took a bath , offered repentance and began reciting the holy Quran till his last breath.thus died the greatest thinker of medieval times at the age of 57, in 1037A.D., being victim of a disease in which he was specialist.
